Chicky Brulee was one of our scholarship winners who attended BurlyConX. We were able to catch up with Chicky post-con to see how her first BurlyCon was!

This was your first ever BurlyCon! What was your experience like?
I learned so much at Burlycon. It was fantastic to be immersed in a space where we could all come together and learn from one another. The opportunity to meet so many performers of color was mind blowing for me. I loved the mixture between business, dance and politics that all seemed to be woven together so beautifully!
How did receiving the scholarship allow you to grow as a performer?
Receiving the scholarship gave me the ability to be among performers of all calibers and learn from people I never thought I would meet before. It made me realize that there are truly no boundaries between where I am and where I want to be in the burlesque world, but also in my everyday life. Having the privilege to take in so much knowledge from queens and legends alike gave me a boost of energy that I needed to continue on my burly path.
Do you have a moment that really stands out to you from one of the classes that you attended?
A moment that really stood out to me was during the Performers of color caucus. There I was, sitting in a room full of beautiful burlesque performers of all colors, shapes and sizes, being seen, being heard and realizing that I’m not the only one out there, but there are so many of us. We all walk the same path and have fought some the same fights. And then, looking to the front of the room and seeing Toni Elling with tears in her eyes, looking upon the legacy that she helped to inspire. That moment sent chills down my spine.
What was the highlight of your BurlyCon experience?
The highlight of my Burlycon experience had to be all of the Dancing! I have never taken so many dance classes in such a short period of time, and it really challenged me and added so much to my performance style.
Knowing what you know now would you apply for the scholarship again?
I would definitely do it again!
Do you have any advice for people thinking about applying for the scholarship?
I say go for it, put the intention in, and have faith that you will receive the scholarship! We never get anywhere without trying!
Anything else that you would like to add?
Just a huge thank you to Burlycon for providing me with this amazing opportunity, and I can’t wait for next year!
